TWICE EXCEPTIONAL (2E) LEARNERS

+ WHAT IS IT?

2E stands for Twice Exceptional. 2E students are those learners who simultaneously have a learning or attention deficit and are gifted. For instance, a gifted child who also has ADHD or dyslexia is considered a 2E learner.

It is not uncommon for the 2E learner’s learning deficit to mask their gifted ability.

+ HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED?

Twice exceptionality is not a diagnosable condition, but rather it is the joining of the diagnosis of a learning and/or attention deficit and the criteria for giftedness to offer a better understanding of one’s learning profile.

+ HOW IS IT MANAGED?

Addressing a 2E learner’s needs effectively requires an understanding of both of the learner’s exceptionalities. This understanding will lead to greater awareness of how the two exceptionalities manifest in the learner and how to support each.

+ HOW CAN THINKING CAP HELP?

Thinking Cap works with either or both of a 2E student’s exceptionalities. In any case we are sensitive to the unique challenges a 2E learner faces both academically and emotionally. We address learning and attention deficits through our one-on-one sessions, parent coaching, and classes and camps. We address giftedness on its own through our Gifted Kid Survival groups.
