EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING

+ WHAT IS IT?

Your executive functions are the functions that must take place for you to do all that you need to do each day. Generally speaking, the executive functions for a given task can include the following:

Initiate
Sustain
Plan and Organize
Attend to the right details/information
Regulate emotions
Self-monitor
Complete

A break down or weakness in any one of these areas can make school and life difficult. Children who struggle with executive functions also often have ADHD, but not always. Read more HERE about the difference between ADHD and Executive Function.

+ HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED?

Executive functioning deficit is not an official diagnosis, however there are well accepted assessments which can pinpoint the specific areas of executive functioning weakness.

+ HOW IS IT MANAGED?

Once the specific areas of executive functioning deficits are identified, then qualified professionals can help train students to improve their skills as well as work around areas of deficit. Most common interventions include teaching organization and time management strategies as well as metacognitive strategies for self-monitoring.
