DYSGRAPHIA

+ WHAT IS IT?

Dysgraphia is a difficulty with written expression. It is not merely messy handwriting, but also includes spelling challenges and challenges with organizing thoughts and putting them down on paper. It is called a Specific Learning Disorder with impairment in written expression by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-Fifth Edition (DSM-V), a manual used by psychologist to determine diagnosis of a variety of mental health concerns.

Dysgraphia may NOT always include messy handwriting.

It is suspected that dysgraphia is an inheritable condition, therefore it often runs in families.

There are no pills to help a person with dysgraphia, however ADHD is a very common co-occurrence with dysgraphia and there are medications for ADHD.

Dysgraphia is a life-long condition but can be significantly improved with targeted remediation.
